Mental Health Risks Associated with Abortion

While abortion might seem like an option that will end your pregnancy and allow you to move on, many women are overwhelmed with difficult emotions afterward.

In a report by American Psychological Association’s (APA) Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion (TFMHA), it was found that “some women do experience sadness, grief, and feelings of loss following termination of a pregnancy, and some experience clinically significant disorders, including depression and anxiety.”

Another study found that many women who had an abortion experienced “deep feelings of loss, existential concerns, and declines in quality of life. More specifically, common negatives included feelings about termination of a life, regret, shame, guilt, depression, anxiety, compromised self-appraisals, and self-destructive behaviors.”

While every woman is unique and will respond differently after abortion, it’s essential to understand these potential mental health effects before choosing abortion. It’s also important to consider the following questions:

  • Why do I want an abortion?
  • How might I feel if I get an abortion?
  • Is someone pressuring me to get one?
  • Do I understand all the potential risks?

Answering these questions can give you a starting place to consider whether abortion is right for you.
